FS: Jim Carroll concert chanter

Post by Joseph »

For sale, a Jim Carroll concert pitch chanter in cocobolo, boxwood mounts, and brass. The chanter has mounts for all four keys but is keyless. I had spoken with Jim previously about putting on the keys. He was more than willing at the time to put the keys on, however I was never able financially to do it. I'm sure if you contacted him, he would have no problem doing it. Jim apprenticed under Davy Stephenson in England and therefor his work has a similar look.

I have a few more pics that I can send by email.

I've had this chanter for a couple of years now and have loved having it. I've found this chanter to be easy to reed and to have great tone and tuning. It also is very comfortable to hold. I am the original owner. There is nothing at all damaged on the chanter with the exception of a small scratch above the "C" whole which is just cosmetic. The bore and wholes have not been altered.

(Here is my original post when I first received it including more pictures and at the end of the post three sound files of the chanter with Jim's reed at the time viewtopic.php?f=6&t=75064&start=0&hilit=jim+carroll).

The chanter comes with two reeds. The first is made from spruce wood by reed master Michael O'Donovan. It did not come with a bridal as Michael feels it hurts the tone of the spruce. The second reed is cane and is made by myself. The cane reed is easier blowing and (I think) has better tone than the spruce reed. But the spruce reed plays just fine and will play in just about every environments. This spruce reed plays especially best in dry situations where a cane reed would close up or go wonky. (Personally I have never heard in person or played a concert pitch wooden reed that sounded as good as cane. I think cane reeds have much better tone for chanter reeds even if they are not as stable). In the future, if something was to happen to the reeds, I'm sure Jim could and would make a new cane reed or I would be more than willing to make a cane reed for free.

The following sound files were made in the last couple days on a small digital voice recorder so the sound quality is not professional, however the tone and tuning (I think) can still be heard. I can make a video file for youtube if needed.
WARNING: the volume of these recording can be loud so have your volume down.
