Up for sale is a Casey Burns Standard Flute in D, recently refurbished by the maker. It is in Mopane with new Sterling silver rings, tuning slide, and end cap with a type of engraving called Guilloche. This is a type of engraving also called "Engine Turning" that has existed since the 1500s and is more associated with antique watch cases and Faberge eggs. Casey rebored and fine tuned this flute for me.

This flute has beautiful figuring in the dark brown wood. It is a striking contrast to the engraved sterling silver. It is flawless and plays with a warm reedy tone in 2 plus octaves. The following quote discusses the design and materials and is from Casey’s website;
"This flute is the culmination of nearly three decades experimenting, tweaking and evolving a flute design inspired by Pratten, Rudall and Prowse flutes into something new, resulting in an instrument that is comfortable to the hands yet responds well. These are carefully voiced for ease of tone production, resulting in a flute that is forgiving to play while maintaining a strong tone, especially a warm and reedy bottom D. This suits the needs of a beginning or casual player, as well as the seasoned player. As one's strength and skill increases, this flute responds! You will find that it is not really necessary to keep the lips in tip top shape to maintain tonal proficiency, due to the forgivingness of this flute. In experienced hands, this flute may be driven as hard, yielding a very rich sound, with a comfortable degree of resistance and firmness.
Mopane, a tree widely distributed in Africa, is found to be an excellent substitute for Blackwood. This wood has only begun to be recognized for its similar properties to Blackwood and more makers are using it… We currently use wood cut in South Africa. Unfortunately, Mopane was discovered as a good wood for all sorts of industrial and commercial purposes such as flooring, etc. In recent years this has resulted in overharvesting and now, ironically, Mopane is harder to get than blackwood in sizes suitable for flute making, although what remains on the market is still less expensive than blackwood. The tree is similar to our Black Locust and is in no danger of extinction fortunately. Its just that the larger trees are now all gone suddenly. As long as I can locate some cut for woodwinds and purchase it, I will continue to use it."
This is the best Mopane flute that I have played, but I have too many flutes….your opportunity. It comes with the original green cloth padded case with a 3 section velcro closed "pouch" type case. This flute has been played and oiled regularly and humidified. Save yourself $100 and 4 months over ordering a brand new one. You won’t be disapointed!
