Is there a reason for that?
Is it at least a step in the signing up process?
I'm sure a lot of new users don't know it is even

Well fearf, there's been a lot of moderator discussion now, with reasonable concerns raised about privacy issues. We're not going to force people to disclose their location if they choose not to. At the same time, we want to make sure that new users in particular are educated to the advantages of filling in the Location profile, and how to do that. Ideally, a blank Location should be the result of a deliberate choice, not just an oversight or difficulty.

As for privacy, with the free choice of user names and locations, user "Chifferoo" in "California" or "Flooter" in "UK, Midlands", for example, still gives a good degree of anonymity along with some of the board advantages of disclosed Location, IMO.

Fair enough, though as you say, folks could always lie if they're worried.

Yeah, that was my thought.
