I have been making a few harmonic overtones flutes, to be used also as walking sticks.
These flutes are really whistles (using a block and windway), but one blows into the side of the head, opposite the window. They also have a single finger hole near the foot end, by which one can play another series of overtones a semi tone step up from the base note series. The scale possibilities took me by surprise, as it comes quite natural to play in a mode similar to Middle Eastern Hijaz (Phrygian Dominant) with its distinctive 1-3-1 semi tones triad of scale notes. So not only can I play two different series of harmonic overtones, but by using both can play in a third very evocative Eastern mode. One pulls the foot out to convert the flute from playing as a normal overtones flute to one with these additional modes.
