No need to thank me. It takes a trained linguist to figure out stuff like this.

Ah, I didn't check - missed that mute was in bewteen 'em. Wasn't counting myself.

Are you regular, Peter? :D

BTW, and Forum (if not topic) relevant - I've just been doing some work on an ideal instrument for you - 5-key French flageolet - one looking very much like this (sorry for the poor quality - it's a websearch library image):

But only a few would be foolish enough to read about, let alone listen to a YouTube video of, this perverse creation. Unless perforced to.

:D

Which "perverse creation"? The French flageolet? No YT clip of that , nor likely to be.....(phew!)

'Sides, not only does my pibgorn look strikingly gorgeous, but it sounds pretty sweet too, as evidenced in the YT clip provided. :) :) :)

You wanna read about pibgyrn? ? ? ? ? ?

The Pibgorn sounds quite similar to a closely related instrument, the Caprigorn. Compare for yourself:

Yes, yes, some of those are sheep, I know. Call it goatistic license.

That low note has a certain unique tone to it compared to the rest of the scale (to my ears anyway). Always like those clips you provide Jem.

Thanks, I.D.10-t. Always nice to receive appreciation! :-)
You're right about the tone quality of the low D, BTW - and there's a simple explanation. It is quite literally the "bell note" and is directly and only vented through the horn. All the other notes have an open tone-hole through which they primarily speak, so are only partly amplified by the horn. For this very reason, some makers (past & present) have drilled "speaker" holes in the horn near the chanter tube's end. Achieving some reduction of the difference is also thought to be a serious reason for/benefit of the traditional fantastical cut-outs often seen in the horns. cf http://pibgyrn.com/ & http://www.mochpryderi.com/Pibgorn.html.

I now have a second pibgorn by another maker, John Tose, which has a very different sound and plays quite differently from my John Glennydd one (in the clip). It has un-thinned horn and the bell horn has the cut-away. Of course the reed, bore and tone-hole design all have effects too. I'll have to make a comparative clip on it when I get a chance (just to make sure benhall.1 stays away..... ;-) - in fact, I believe he's about to run very far away...... I offered to play it for him down the phone last night, but........).

For your debate/delectation:
Video comparison of 2 pibgyrn by different makers.
