How to play the Persian ney
I think this must be the most intimidating tutorial for any kind of musical activity on the whole of YouTube:

Made damn sure that I'm never going to try it, anyway.

I believe that is the first time that the word "horrifying" seemed to me to apply to an instrument... It must take the patience of a saint just to get the silly thing to squeek!
...don't worry - that was just the rarely heard note of K flat. I meant to do that.

Re: How to play the Persian ney
I only watched half of it. I was afraid that his Mom was going to jump into the video and tell him to clean his room NOW!
1. His dresser drawers aren't shut fully.
2. His music stand isn't even built completely.
3. Couldn't he shut the closet door? He obviously doesn't share that closet, it's half empty.
4. What is the purpose of that table and chairs?
5. He does have a nice rack of bamboo flutes of sorts.
6. Either that video is old or he has got to quit pulling his wool socks over top his pant legs. Is he going for a bike ride?
7. Don't ever video the floor, that just shows how messy you really are.
8. On the positive side, he's much neater than I am.

Thanks for those observations, mute! You convinced me that I will never release a home-made whistle video! Be grateful
As to learning the ney: I never tried. I got myself a kaval many years back in communist Bulgaria. I was shown how to play it by an old kaval player who had permanent indendations on his lips, where he placed his kaval (luckely the kaval mouth piece is placed diagonally on the lips, not in the mouth). It took me three days to get a single tone out of it.
I thought the video was quite constructive.

Oh dear, I missed that! So it is true, I heard ney players have a tooth removed!Peter Duggan wrote:He says, 'I don't have space between my front teeth but had my dentist cut a small space, not all the way, between them.'hans wrote:I thought the video was quite constructive.

My all time favorite is the video in the guy's bedroom. People interrupted him. He looked adopted. I thought the wallpaper was hideous but someone pointed out that the pattern wasn't flowers but rocketship and space stuff from his childhood days. My eyes aren't that good. Make a video, just at someone else's house.hans wrote:Thanks for those observations, mute! You convinced me that I will never release a home-made whistle video! Be grateful

And here is a link to a collection of videos.

In my defense, I really don't see well, and I go through life all the time having no clue what some things are and mis-identifying them because they look similar. I almost hurled the other day because someone was eating some major chunks of what I thought was cheese but was actually cantaloupe. Foods often confuse me.

We're making huge strides in lenses these days.
They'll even put them in frames so they stay on
your face without pinching your nose.

You'd think. On the positive side, I have a deeper appeciation for Vincent VanGogh.

Following Mutepoint's tangent...
I am really bad about not wearing my reading glasses around the house. I just leave a pair of readers at work, at my desk at home, have bifocal safety glasses in the shop and bifocal sunglasses in the car. Anyway, at home we make presweetened ice tea from a concentrate sold in jugs at the grocery store (it's a Southern US thing). One time my wife got a different brand of pancake syrup than usual because they had a special price on a jug of it. The pitcher of tea I made before dinner that night did not go over all that well (though a couple of the kids liked it )...
