I've just made a Shakuhachi from simple PVC pipe. I always make the mouth piece last, and blow onto the edge of the pipe just to make sure it's in tune.

Now I have had a moment of seredipity:

I cut the pipe with a tube cutter, which indents the edge of the pipe slightly...and when I blew over the edge to test the tuning, the sound that came out was so hauntingly deep, clear (no hissing!) that I am tempted not to carve/ cut the conventional edge that one would normally find on a Shakuhachi.

Do you guys think this can still count as a "Shakuhachi," especially for commercial purposes?

Looking forward to you opinions.

Francois from South Africa.

It seems that you might just call it a shakuhachi hybrid if you want to sell it commercially, and if you aren't charging a lot of money, it still might sell. But people who buy student (pvc) shakuhachis are usually looking mostly for the whole package, to train themselves for later upgrading to a bamboo instrument. So they want the standard cut mouthpiece.

What you also have now is just more simply, a rim-blown flute, which has been used throughout the world by different cultures over time. Others here are familiar with all sorts of these, I'm sure, and could probably be more helpful about them.

You might want to join and run this question by the people who really know shaks, here:

At the very least, if you like your "invention", there's no saying you shouldn't play it and enjoy it for what it is, if it pleases you!
