Off Topic..Tobacco Smell in my Ocarina..

Post by weedie »

G'day All,
I was'nt sure where to post this ..so I'll try right here..
I've recently bought a couple of old CLAY Ocarina's on the E-Bay and there is quite a bad nicotine sort of pong about them.....and this gets stronger as they heat up/gather moisture....
Would anyone have any tips on how to neutralize the smell ???
Thanks and Best Wishes.....Weedie..........

Coffee. Although I can't claim credit for the idea. See this thread:

Hi Weedie,

I asked this same question and it was Kevin Krell who gave the answer. I did it and it worked. See the thread, awildman posted and how I did it is on page 3. Good luck.

Hmmm...

I believe there is a mystery a foot.

Lets look at the clues, shall we?

1: Weedie

2: Clay Ocarina with some sort of resin build up.

3: Smells of smoke when you heat it up.

Are you quite sure that its an ocarina you were sold?

I think this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Or, the Aanvil calling the iron hammered.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Let's put it in the World/Folk Winds Forum. I'd say it goes there. :)

Thanks everyone...
I'll try the coffee method and see what happens....might even wake me up a bit !! The smell of coffee would surely be better than nicotine tar...
..and to Aanvil..I just went and checked and its for sure an Ocarina and not a "Cheech and Chong".....
although you could have opened up a few possibilities there...
On the odd occasion I have enjoyed the 'erb but my user name of weedie comes from my passion for fishing for Luderick (Blackfish) .They are mostly a vegetarian fish and eat Green Weed which grows in tidal pools and creeks......a great fighting fish and lovely to eat..
Anyway thats my story, and I'm stickin' to it .....
Bye for now.....weedie.........

I suggest a long soak in heavy Baking Soda/water mix and then a good soak/rinse in cold distilled water. The sour smell comes from "acid" in the tobacco tar. Baking Soda is safe and effective.

It won't dissolve if the clay is fired. If not, you're out of luck.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')
