Clarinet Tunes (could be played on whistle)

Post by BoneQuint »

I've been learning clarinet for a while (I bought one in June 2006), mostly to play folk dance tunes from around the world. It's taking a while to get a good embouchure (I still can't play very long, even when using soft reeds). But I recorded a few tunes to help the learning process along, so I thought I'd post them and the sheet music.

I don't know the name of the first tune, and the folks I got it from don't know either. They think it's Russian. Any ideas? Here's a quick recording, and the sheet music in the original key of G minor, as well as a whistle-friendly version in B minor (which you could play on a Bb whistle to play along with the recording):

The second tune I transcribed from an album of Hungarian tárogató music. The modern tárogató is a wooden single-reed instrument which is sort of a cross between a clarinet and a soprano saxophone, with a bit of an oboe-like haunting nasal quality to it. The tune was in a medley simply entitled "Slovak Folk-Songs." It's from the playing of László Kiss Gy. on the album "Halld a tárogató hangját (Hear the Sound of the Tárogató!)." It was originally in F, I transposed it to A to play in the range of the clarinet, so it sounds in G as in the sheet music below (the clarinet is a transposing instrument). I fixed a few of the worst errors in the recording:

Total beginner stuff, but it was fun!

:D

it's coming along, innit!

the lip is a bit wobbly yet, tongue needs to flick a bit faster, finger/tongue timing is off a bit off on occasion

ya might want to try constricting the throat a bit (one of the big problems with playin' flute and sax is that flute is played open throat, sax is not)
