Keys for Native American Flute playing

How do you determine how many different keys you can play on your native American flute and how many of you try to play them for a variety of music? Years ago I heard Michael Telepary play Summertime and it sounded fantastic. The flute he used was in the Key of A. I am presuming he was using a chromatic scale to play it but it sure sounded good. I am investigating the NAF and trying to understand the type of scales one can use to play a variety of music. Any input would be appreciated.

Buy a good flute and it is almost chromatic over a range of an octave plus a minor third. Most people don't play it that way, but if you do, there is a great range of music available to you.

My channel delves into this in pretty good detail (among other things)
