Tom Silver proud owner of Claude Laurent Crystal flute.
Yes most of you all thought that the guy who got the Laurant flute on Ebay was going to get screwed and that it was a con job from Russia. Well I did take a big risk and this is what I got for it. Check out the photos. I will try to post them all. Sometimes when something seems to good to be true and is "Not" to good to be true. Was there a doubt in this transaction actually being a real one? You bet there was but I thought that the worst thing that can happen is that I lost my money by another cheating liar. The best thing that could happen was that I would get send a Flute that I only dreamed of having for about 45 years..... Sometimes we take chances in life by trusting a human being. That is what I did and here is the EBAY Claude Laurent Crystal flute exactly the way I got it.
I wonder if a Russian Czar owned it. Anyone have any ideas???

That. Is. Cool.

What's up with the Eb key resting over the low C and C# keys? Or, is that just the way it looks in the photos? Other than that peculiarity, it looks to be in great shape.

Eric the Eb screws or rod seems to be missing and that's why the Eb key appears to be over the other lower D and C keys.

Well, that's a fairly easy fix! They look like standard pin mounts...you could probably cut a piece of paper clip to the right length as a temporary fix.

Thanks Eric. I made a mistake by saying C and D keys, I meant C and C# keys. I have played this flute and it appears that the pads on it are still good.

You'd do well to reach out to David/Nina Shorey (still in California?). They are the world experts on flutes by Claude Laurent. You can reach them through http://www.antiqueflutes.com

Laurent flutes were not typically made for the masses or those of lesser standing.
Many world leaders of the period owned one. Napoleon had two.

A very nice "get." You took the risk and reaped the rewards. Well done.

I've had the pleasure of playing a few Laurents (including one of those above-mentioned Napoleon flutes).
They play lovely, best at the pitch of the period (a=432) and are heavy (b/c of the leaded crystal).

Sadly, many are deteriorating b/c of the lead. They apparently pit and basically start degrading. I don't know, but an expert in that area has explained it that way to me. <shrug> For what it's worth.

I've said it before, but one of the coolest things about playing a Laurent flute is that it should sound just the same as it did when it was new. There's no question of bore shrinkage or distortion. The ones I've played have had extraordinary sounds.

I own one myself, with a broken footjoint, and have been thinking about different methods of repair. I think 3D printed glass may be the most feasible option, from a 3D scan of an intact original. I have also considered trying to shorten the original C-foot to a D-foot. Not sure what is the best option.

Well all I know is that mine was made in 1821 and the owner lives in Russia and his wife's family had owned it for over 100 years. I would guess that someone in Russian Royalty must have owned it. I hope you saw the photos Montserrat. If not I would be glad to send you some through wetransfer.

Montserrat you play the Laurent flute amazingly well. Beautiful intonation and color... I have watched your videos before. The one I own looks very close to the one you played. I wish I could find someone who has records on these flutes. I have not seen another 1821 Laurent flute except for mine. I wish I knew more about my flute. The condition of the one I own is great except I do need a screw or rod on one of the keys (C#) and maybe some newer pads. It does play the way it is but adjustments and or new pads would make it play much better.

Thanks
Tom
