Re: Flute Photos!!! Come post your flute pictures :)
I recently bought this flute, made by Edward Riley in New York, sometime around 1820. I bought it from Patrick Olwell, who told me that its previous owner told him it had sat in a tool box for about 70 years! The astonishing thing is that it did not have a crack on it anywhere--not even on the head joint along the embouchure hole. My sense is that it is pretty rare to see a crack-free boxwood flute with a lined head joint, especially one of this vintage. The flute was missing the long F key and block, which John Gallagher replaced for me on Patrick's recommendation. He did a phenomenal repair job: cast a new long F key and matched the color of the boxwood perfectly with the replacement block. You would really have to be looking for it to see that there had been a repair.
I was also wondering if anyone might be able to tell me anything about this flute, which appears to be somewhat rare among extant Riley flutes. There are two Riley flutes in the Dayton Miller collection, both of which are one-keyed traverso-style flutes. I have not seen another eight-keyed Riley flute. One person suggested that this particular flute might have been made by either Firth or Hall, both of whom apprenticed in Riley's shop around this time. The flute also plays beautifully and at modern pitch.
Thanks for your help.
Paul

In case you hadn't guessed, this is my first time posting photos to the board! Could someone coach me a bit here--how can I enlarge the photos in my previous post, which I have linked to my Facebook page?
Thanks again,
Paul

Paul,
That flute is an amazing piece of history (and a beauty to boot). Jeez, it's nearly 200 years old!
Thanks for posting it.

Thanks, Jason. There are many amazing things about this flute, but its playability is what really blows me away. It's got small holes, but, as I mentioned, plays at modern pitch and would be a fine session flute, if I had the courage to risk having it dropped/sat on/fall off a table!

Holes don't look particularly small to me, more like medium sized. Nice looking flute

Well, I suppose the holes on just about any flute seem small to me since my main flute is a Hamilton. You can practically drop coins through the holes on Hammy's flutes!

I used to play a bansuri with huge holes before changing to irish flutes. The first time I blew into a friend's flute, a Hamilton in fact, I couldn't play it properly and said: "the holes are small, I can't feel them under my fingers!"

Hi all, just got the pics for my first flute. http://imageshack.us/g/593/img0089xh.jpg/
A bit dated as i'm on to my 5th now but shape and design are the same. The photographer was not sure where the end cap went....so he stuck it in the barrell !?.corrected in later pics

Yes, it's one of mine. An unlined Rudall with a few alterations for modern pitch and intonation. My newer ones have a larger embrechure hole and flatter tip ring profiles . I'm in the middle of a keyed one so i'll post some more pictures when I have something.
