I now have the Sarah van Cornewal CD mentioned above and it is very nice indeed. Very French! Well worth acquiring. She does in fact play on a Tulou "flute perfectionnée" - the fully developed version and one with a B foot!

I have just today come across these videos of a Kuhlau sonata played on a Grenser 8-key copy by Rudolph Tutz (one of the long-standing mainstay period instrument reproduction flute specialists) by a flautist I haven't previously heard of, Anne Pustlauk. Very nice. (Posted in this useful Facebook Group.)

Which reminds me, I don't think I have previously added this to this thread: F. Doppler - Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise op.26 played by Anna Besson on another Grenser copy by Martin Wenner.

Just drawn to my attention on Facebook by Blayne Chastain, some lovely period pieces (excerpts, not whole works) played extremely well on a 1830s Viennese flute by Koch by Jan Boland, including the whole of Charles Nicholson's arrangement of Roslin Castle for solo flute. She doesn't play it on a Nicholson style flute, but she does a very persuasive job!

For interest's sake, here's a beautifully performed rendition of the Nicholson on a modern wooden Böhm flute - showing rather well when compared to Jan Boland's performance what Böhm lost as well as what he gained for the flute.

You can read along to the Nicholson with the facsimile score from Rick Wilson's website - his notes about it are worth reading.

FWIW, I think it's quite significant, not to say amusing, how similar in its way Ms. Boland's rendition of Nicholson's notation is in many respects to the methods and ideals of present day traditional slow air performance.

In Charles Nicholson's words, the ideal [wooden] flute tone should sound something between a hautboy and a clarionet.

I think there are many good Baroque/Romantic/Folk 8-key flute players out there, who make good use of all or most of their keywork. However, I think the only one who probably resembles more closely the powerfull and brilliant tone of Charles Nicholson is our well known friend Chris Norman, especially when playing this kind of arrangements:

Gradually, gradually, there are more classically trained specialists putting out Romantic era flute material on C19th simple system flutes - not "our" English ones (which led to the modern "Irish"), for the most part, but still. Some lovely playing and interesting music too!

Anna Besson, Alexis Kossenko: Eugène Walckiers - Duo in B minor op. 57 no. 1 (Boléro) Alexis Kossenko - flute by Bellisent 1830 Anna Besson - flute by F Aurin after W Liebel c1845 (Alexis has commented on Facebook that he has two Tulou flutes undergoing renovation and that he hopes to re-record this piece using them.)

The album is available as MP3 downloads from Amazon (and probably elsewhere, but I haven't checked) but there don't seem to be hard copy CDs available.

(Periodic) Thread Revival!

I've acquired quite a few recordings of simple system performances of Romantic era material contemporary to the flutes in recent times - gradually more is being done/appearing. I haven't time right now for an exhaustive list, but this one stands out as being of particular interest here. Dr. Martyn Shaw got his PhD for a thesis on Nicholson and acquired a T Prowse Nicholson's Improved flute from Robert Bigio specifically for his research and his degree recital. I only discovered recently he has actually issued a CD using it. It's available on Amazon etc. or from his website. He is giving a lunchtime recital in Huddersfield in March which I am planning to attend - ticketting details here and more info here.

As for the CD, I'm not writing a full review, but it is both very interesting and, to me, slightly disappointing in that there is only one Nicholson composition in the programme. Also, playing-wise, though Shaw gets a lovely sound out of the Prowse flute, I don't feel he really finds the power and resonance we would expect and Nicholson would surely have drawn from the low end range. Still well worth acquiring, though.

Yet another thread revival!

There do seem gradually to be more classical period instrument players venturing into the C19th multi-keyed flute and doing the graft to command the instrument. I've acquired several more CDs since the previous post, but no time right now to check and list them. Few seem to be playing the English instrument we love here, but there's remarkable playing on German, Austrian and French versions of the flute to be found and enjoyed.

Just recently Alexis Kossenko, virtuoso French player of flutes through time from baroque to modern, has been posting some informal videos on Facebook. He's worth checking out around the Web, but for now, here's his latest (amazing, phenomenal) FB offering:

flute player Erwan Menguy here. The level of control and mastery of the flute he demonstrates
is quite astonishing, and he seems to be able to do it across several genres.
