Re: Posting clips
A couple of slow tunes. The first is a version of The Month of January, inspired by the singing of June Tabor. The second is an original composition of mine, with an attempt at harmonizing. Hope you enjoy them.

Re: Posting clips
I'm just learning the boehm flute and am just at the stage where I'm practicing the first 3 notes, to get to grips with the embouchure, with repeated long notes. Hopefully by this time next year I'll be able to play an actual tune.

Re: Posting clips
Well I stopped playing the flute for a while, but recently I decided to have another go, and I'm making progress.
The tune I'm playing is quite simplified in the Trevor Wye book but I added a D5 to make it sound complete.

Re: Posting clips
Congrats, just keep at it, Larry, it does take time to get your embouchure, I still have the occasional times were I lose it half way through a tune, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually.

Amazing Grace. Managed to play down to low D. Haven't played in a while then I got a cold on New Year's Eve so couldn't play any winds. (A small bottle of Jack Daniels helped on that night;) )

Re: Posting clips
Hi Larry, well done.
I suggest you try using just the head joint a practicing just with that for much of the time. You know , moving on to partly and fully cover the end of the headjoint with your right palm, giving pitch change. This will get you the feel for back pressure changing with different notes. Play the full flute too but aim to get a good solid focused blow with the headjoint before doing too much with the whole yoke.
I understand Boehm flute players use a slightly different embouchure than trad flute and I've never played Boehm. There is plenty advice on the net though. It might be a bit boring but it will make playing a lot easier. You will probably find you get the hang of it reasonably quickly. Also work on playing notes cleanly and easily up and down the flute once you have the embouchure coming on.
It might also be worth having an experienced play check your flute to make sure it doesn't have any problems.
If you are already doing this please ignore

Re: Posting clips
A clip of me playing "The Parting of Friends" made famous by the great Matt Molloy. Played on one of my flutes I nicknamed "The Beast" as it is rather loud and it is the one with the largest holes I made so far. Also the best-sounding of my humble efforts at flute-making. Due to covid I have shelved any plans of making/selling any more instruments anyway for the forseeable future. Originally my plan was to make and sell cheap but well-playing aluminium flutes.

Re: Posting clips
And the usual sloppy and mediocre playing of my humble self. But the tone is getting better, me thinks. And Brendan Mullholland said, tone is most important.
