Olwell Bamboo Flute Question

This is probably simple, but I'm confused... when I look on the HMT site, his cane flutes come in Low D, but not D. I thought "D" in a flute was the same as a Low D whistle, so why a Low D flute ?

Also, as you can probably tell, I'm a beginner with this...so if I order this flute, what's the best key for Irish music? Thanks for any advice... Tod

A D flute and Low D flute are in deed the same thing. The designation 'Low' helps to distinguish it from a 'High' D flute which would be a fife (similar to a piccolo).

And 'D' is probably the best to start with. I have a "D", an "F", an "A'ish" and a "B'ish".

Thanks! I haven't tried a flute before, play whistle (a little) and harmonica, and am hoping that this bamboo cane isn't too hard for a beginner to learn to play....this certainly looks like the value one to get from the posts here.... thanks again - Tod
