Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

No kidding. I bought my current and only flute on Ebay, and it sure wasn't cheap. It was a known maker of high reputation so I didn't feel like it was a major risk, except for the usual shipping drama and it arrived in good shape.

If you do enough research, Ebay can be a good way to expand a search for something you're interested in, but you do have to know the market and the respected makers, and none of those flutes will be cheap.
