Hari Prasad Chaurasia gave a concert in Houston Saturday night. There is no doubt in my mind that he deserves the title Pandit (master). He could make that simple 6-hole flute do the most amazing things. I'm a whislter, not a flute player, but his playing easily rivals the greats of Irish flute playing and, dare I say, perhaps surpasses the lot - at least in some ways.

I was impressed with the odd correspondence the ragas have with Irish music too. Both have unique modal character and are ornamented. In both, mastery is defined by the improvisational playful manipulation of the tune.

It occured to me to wonder if he and the Chieftains....

Neat isn't it that the classical
music of India is improvisational?

Most of eastern trad music is improvisational. The form is rhythm, more than anything else. The Japanese though have a whole different scene. They have notation.
