I'm thinking of getting a Tony Dixon rosewood 3-piece flute and would like to know any opinions about these flutes. I currently have been learning on a Boehm metal flute and am really anxious to get started on a real Irish flute. Thanks for any help in the matter.

While you're considering a Dixon, you might also want consider the latest design from M&E.

I just took delivery of a new M&E polymer flute in what I am told by Mark Polczynski is a new design for M&E, based on a historical Rudall and Rose instrument.

I'm absolutely amazed by the sound of this instrument, it far exceeded my expectations for a plastic flute and competes with any wooden flute currently in my collection.

Mine has the silver bands, makes for a very good looking instrument as well.

Price from the M&E website is around $375.00

I have the 3 piece Dixon polymer flute and am very pleased with it. As a beginner, I personally found it to be easier to play and better sounding than the original M&E design (haven't heard the new M&E) or the Seery. I would expect that the Dixon rosewood would be very nice and is probably a reasonable choice for the $300 price range.... I got the polymer because it's hassle free to maintain and a good price at the Whistleshop on-line. - Tod
