Dominic Allan Flute

Post by hans »

I have been trying one of Dominic Allan's small holed 8-key flutes.
This flute is made of blackwood with boxwood rings and silver plated nickel-silver keywork. I am extremely pleased with it and ordered one for myself. The smaller hole sizes mean it requires less air to fill, and it plays very easy. The keywork is ergonomically very friendly and the whole flute is most beautifully crafted. The intonation and the tone is great, and the prize very reasonable. I can only recommend it.

I put together some pictures: http://softflute.co.uk/music/Allan_flut ... _flute.htm.

PS: This is not meant as a commercial ad, I just love this flute and I am so happy finally having found a flute which works for me, after trying various other flutes from various makers. I think the smaller hole sizes suits my style of playing particularly well, even if it is not the typical Irish flute with biggish holes. Dominic makes a Pratten-type flute as well, but I have not tried it.

Hey Loren,

it worked for me. It's a nice looking flute. His prices are quite good, too.

I wish I even knew there was such a thing as a clarinet making school when I was younger - what a cool link into the flute world. Is there a flute making school?

Odd, the link works for me now, figures.

There is no flute making school (as such) here in the US, but I believe there is something in the UK, but I can't remember the name of the school/university.
