- Tell us something.: I currently play a Boehm flute. I am interested in expanding to an Irish flute. I’m hear it learn about the different flutes I might look to buy, and about playing the Irish flute. The fingerings look pretty similar but the techniques look different from what I play now.
Roll up pouch
I have decided on my first Irish flute. I’m going to get a Somers 5-piece Pratten. However, after speaking to the flute maker, he indicated he will not be providing any kind of case going forward. I have been unable to source a suitable replacement and hereby invite any recommendations.

Re: Roll up pouch
When I got my current flute it needed a new case, so as a temporary measure I bought a cheap plastic pistol case from Amazon with "pluck out" foam. The one I bought isn't quite as protective as something like a Pelican molded pistol case, but it's lightweight and smaller: https://www.amazon.com/Lockable-Revolve ... istol+case
After that, I invested in a custom Northwind case. These are beautiful French-style cases in wood and leather. Very nice and custom-fitted to your flute, but not inexpensive: https://www.northwindcase.com/

This is a compact and easy alternative:

Re: Roll up pouch
Since delrin flutes are virtually indestructable, all you really need is something to keep it from getting the occasional scratch. Get some sort of thick cloth (a hand towel, piece of fleece, some flannel, etc.), fold it over and stitch three or four sections and voila. Get fancy with a flap that folds over the opening and some sort of ribbon or cord to bind it up. Pretty simple really.
More expensive and nicer looking (but really overkill for a delrin flute) are the sorts of rolls sold by Von Huene for recorders.
Best wishes.
Steve

Re: Roll up pouch
Much appreciated guys, the Von Huene four slot roll will do just fine. The price is about what I would expect. Thanks!

- Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee

Another option along the same lines, made by a recorder player and former Von Huene employee. https://www.canzonet.net/product-catego ... woodwinds/
A little more expensive but they do have an actual carrying handle. Custom colors are also available I believe.

- Tell us something.: I grew up playing Irish traditional music in NYC and was fortunate enough to have been taught by the esteemed Jack Coen. I treasure my antique Blee & Co flute, which was obtained in the 80s from the late, great PJ Crotty. Now, I look forward to trying some new flutes, and to many more years of great tunes.

I am using this for a 4-piece keyless Copley:

It's not padded, but the pockets are the perfect size. And I love how compact it is.
