Silver flute "pickers"...

Post by piperjoe »

Hi All,

A recent post by Jason Pollack got me to thinking about other Irish/Scottish fluters who prefer, or like Jason and I by necessity, play Boehm system flutes.

A while back on this forum I came across a list of several I hadn't heard of but now I can't find it and searching for "Boehm" brings up a plethora of folks discussing the shape, the keys, the sound, the concept and in some cases generally condemning the things outright.

I'm familiar with Joannie Madden, Noel Rice, Philippe Barnes, Brian McCoy and a few others. However, I'd really like to find and listen to more folks who are in my camp so to speak.

Anyone got more names for me? I'd appreciate it (and owe you a pint).

All 3 from my post are also on the Wooden Flute Obsession CDs (as are Joanie Madden & Noel Rice, too).

Sean Moloney plays both Boehm & simple system flutes.

Ann McAuliffe plays a wooden Boehm and so does Deirdre McSharry. Paddy Donoghue played a silver Boehm (it was easier to find than a wooden flute at the time, or so he used to say).

I wonder if that is what she is playing on her live in Australia duet with Nicholas (also on WFO).

Ah, g'wan then. This went up on the Source earlier this week: Billy Clifford & Gerry Harrington at he Cobblestone 5 feb 19

I wonder if that is what she is playing on her live in Australia duet with Nicholas (also on WFO).
Probably. There's a poor quality group photo on the Duchas record from 1978, you can't see much detail of her flute but the outline is definitely one of the same keywork. So the assumption presents itself she always played a Boehm system.

You won't be able to see it in this image but I have the lp here

Also look at the recent Gradam Cheoil.

I don't know much about her or her music, existing at the edge of my field of vision more or less as a name only, but there's also Aine Heslin

If that's Anne McAuliffe in Peter's first photo, she's playing a Rudall Carte Radcliff's Model with a thinned head, not a Böhm system.

It can be seen very clearly in this video: https://youtu.be/_1zgPJN3dt0

Aine's Tune Foundry CD is excellent. I think she's one of the best silver fluters. Really nice lady as well.
