Tell us something.: An uilleann piper of 14 years from ireland.
I like a drop of fine Irish whiskey with a few tunes.
Sometimes I also think life would have been so much easier if I had taken up the concertina.

FS Henry Fentum 8 key Flute

Post by uilleannpiperireland »

Lovely Flute in Cocus wood and silver I believe.
8 fully functioning keys that all work fantastically.
Plays at modern concert pitch and is an all round lovely flute.
Chris Wilkes overhauled it a few years back and commented "without doubt one if the best Fentums you will ever come across."
Jon Cornia recently gave it a full service and re-socketed the joint between the head and the body of the flute as there was a couple of older cracks in this section, this section is now rock solid.
The head had a small very old crack (on the opposite side to the embouchure) Jon also reviewed and tidied this up and it is like new.
He said the flute was likely made by Wylde who was a supplier for Ruddall and Rose.
Fully functioning and an absolute dream to play.
I am a piper and thought i would have time to take up the flute but with a growing family this is not the case.
Reluctant sale.

Nice flute! Fentums can be great players.

Most likely it is made of cocuswood, though, not cocobolo. A lot of people react badly to cocobolo, and being a member of the Dalbergia family it is CITES listed too, making International sales difficult. It would be very unusual for an antique like this to be made of cocobolo. I've never come across one. Most are cocuswood, and that is what this one looks like to me, based on the pictures.

Good luck with your sale!

You are indeed right, I didn't even realize I had typed Cocobolo.
And I didn't proof read my post, apologies, I have edited it correctly.

And cocuswood is not CITES listed, so OK to ship.

Hi, gorgeous looking flute. Can your tell me what names and address are stamped on it?

I have a fentum (h. Fentum, 78 strand London)that was also overhauled by Chris Wilkes a few years back and he said similar things about mine, saying that some fentums are good, some very good and some exceptional.

Mine also has a lip plate, but all the way round, with no ring around the embouchure.

Good luck

Curious. There appears to be a white circle of something immediately surrounding the embouchure hole.
What is it made of?

That’s an embouchure hole bushing, and would typically be ivory, unless done very recently. Even so, there are makers/restorers who still have pre-ban ivory on hand and will use it when “appropriate”. Real ivory bushings are done on recorder thumb holes rather frequently even today, for example.
