Hi Kenny

I learned it from the book the Trip to Sligo. I will have to check out my copy of it but I am nearly sure that it was down as Unknown.

I will let you know when I can review the book.

Cheers

John

Thanks for that Sean. If you find it, please let me know what page it's on. Myself and a few others at "thesession.org" managed to identify all but about a dozen of the "unknowns" in that book. A gentleman by the name of Sol Foster created a list of the tunes at these locations, if the links work :

Is his "nom de forum" perhaps Colomon? He posts here regularly.

Best wishes.

Steve

Yes, that's me. I had lots of help with the names (as I see kenny already said), mind you, my big contribution was having the idea and writing a bit of software to help make the list visible from multiple views. (I should get around to making fancy HTML output someday too, but the text stuff kenny linked to is still pretty handy.)

"Aine's Invitation / The Trip To Peterswell" - Paddy O'Donoghue [ composer ]. Played on "Boehm-system" flute.
I have posted transcriptions of both of these fine flute reels on "thesession.org".

I was asked if I had any recordings of Sligo flute player "Sonny" McDonagh. Only the one, I'm afraid, but good stuff.
"Kiss The Maid Behind The Barrel / The Shaskeen" :

Looks like Sonny has one track on The Coleman Archive Volume 2. There's also a bunch of tracks from a "James McDonagh" on "The Mountain Road" -- dunno if he's a relative or not, cannot dig up my copy of Trip to Sligo ATM to see if it sheds any light on the subject.

Hi Sol - just had a look at "The Mountain Road" sleeve notes. James McDonagh was/is "Sonny's" son.
He [ "Sonny" ] has 1 track on "Coleman Archive Vol.2", as you say.

Also two tracks on Vol 3 -- one solo "Maid Behind the Barrel / Shaskeen" (same as yours, I'm guessing) and "Queen of the May" with Mick Joe Ryan and Tommy Hunt. (Should have thought to grep against the output of my MP3 tag dumper yesterday.)

Edited to add: Nope, just checked, and I'm fairly certain the Vol 3 recording is different than the one you linked.

Thanks for the tunes, folks. I'm working my way through. It put me in mind of the Flute Geezers tunes that circulated around; I hadn't listened for a while, I put them on in the truck, and then stumbled on them online again here https://www.lafferty.ca/music/irish/flute-geezers/ , or they might be in several places, not sure. In case they are new to anyone.

Posted in memory of Darach de Brun, - composer of "The Man Of Aran" - who departed from us 7 years ago today.

Gary Shannon on flute, Carol Talty on piano - from 1983. [ "Mr. Gumby" will recognise where it came from. ]

Terry McGee wrote:And all of it is a reminder of how fragile our intangible cultural history is. Kenny may well have some of the best or only extant recoverable recordings of some tunes played by some of these players. That's sobering. We all need to examine our private recordings and wonder if we have a responsibility to have at least some of them returned to the public domain. Good man, Kenny!

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but does ITMA have any protocol for accepting recordings like this submitted by collectors? If not, perhaps a site like that should be established...

Aw man, I saw the most uncanny thing a while ago. Although it seems like this should be more obvious now that the internet has been mainstream for two decades, it was really, really strange to see a comment from Darach on a YouTube video someone posted of themselves playing the Maple Leaf (one of my favorites, incidentally!)

Just a simple, "Lovely! Thanks for playing my tunes," but it was surprising!
