Per my local CITES inspector's request I did bring home samples (actually, knife handle blanks) of several of the different CITES II listed Rosewood species yesterday. This will be a start for them. There is much to be seen in the polished surfaces of finished products but all Rosewoods seem to have a similar pore structure that is easily distinguished from others just by sight. I suspect if someone is trying to put something past them, the inspectors would give a piece greater scrutiny, remove samples for DNA etc.
