Rest in Peace Claire Soubeyran

Post by dunnp »

Sad to report on International Women’s Day that Claire Soubeyran, one of the few female makers of wooden flutes has passed away.

Though not a maker of flutes for Irish music, Claire’s catalog of flutes was very impressive particularly for her conical Boehm flutes amazing looking keyword. I’ve not seen another modern maker copying these flutes. I’ve read she was a great restorer of old French flutes in particular.

The passing of a maker is always sad news but this might also be the passing of the only maker of conical Boehm flutes

Rest in Peace

She was also the only flute maker I know who offered a simple system french flute copy (*), based on Tulou design.

I met her once in Paris at Musicora, great person, and very knowledgeable. I always intended to visit her workshop... Very sad to read this news.

(*) Sorry Terry, I just remember there is a Noe on your website...

No apology needed, Matt. But well remembered!

Philippe Allain-Dupré advises that Claire died of a ruptured aneurysm. I had a brain aneurysm that did the same thing, probably about 35 years ago. The pain (from the pressure on the brain) was pretty full-on. Apparently I was given a 10% chance of survival. Fortunately, no one mentioned this to me. They just kept me in a darkened room and waited.

A subsequent CAT scan could find no trace of the rupture, so they concluded that the cells that failed were destroyed in the event. The specialist said "go away and live the rest of your life", so I am. Claire didn't get the second chance.

Very sad news indeed. I never had any dealings with her, but her website is one of the best maker's websites. I hope it will be maintained (suitably adjusted) by her heirs or at least be fully archived and remain accessible, not just lost in due course when a service provision subscription expires.
I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

Tell us something.: Hi, I started having a go at playing the flute a few weeks ago and I noticed your forum is the place to be for finding information.

I was going to visit Claire next summer (I wanted to order a baroque flute from her). A major loss and a sad day, indeed...

Kind regards,
Peter
