Clinton & Co Equisonant long body with Brille

Post by Martian Ind »

Hi,

I am not a flute player unfortunately, although I was only two out of a class of 30 who got a few notes out of an oboe reed, and had the opportunity to play the oboe, but as I was already tinkling the ivory's I left it to number two...

For my sins, and for the past approx 30 years I attended our local auction houses, and have picked up numerous, woodwind, brass and stringed instruments. I nearly always consign them to specialist auction houses. Several years ago I was lucky enough to pick up the Clinton. I recently consigned some violins to Brompton's March sale, and I was convinced to include the Clinton.

The purpose of this posting is to advise your members that this flute is in the sale, if anyone is interested I can provide more detailed images and advise of general condition. Its a rare flute, and is listed on Terry McGee's website. I took it to a fair a number of years back, and a flute player, got a few notes out of it, but it is in need of some new pads.

Any questions or more pics / condition let me know and I can post (cannot seem to post pics)

Best regards Martin

Tell us something.: I started with playing bamboo flutes. But I transitioned to primarily playing the Boehm flute a few lessons ago with the aim of getting good music instruction. However, I've been transitioning to playing Irish Traditional Music on simple flutes.

What is the serial number? Is it the serial number 91 that Terry McGee mentions?

Pictures have to be hosted on a 3rd party website and then they can be hosted on Chiff & Fipple using the web-address of the image.

Unlikely to be #91, Aaron, as that was an example of Clinton's early conicals made on his behalf by Potter. Here's an example of what I've termed a "Clinton & Co Equisonant long body with Brille".

Image

Something very much resembling a Prattens, but with the Brille keys linking holes 1 & 2 with a duplicated c hole. Analysis at: http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/Clint-113.htm

That what's in front of you, Martin?

Which is linking (hotlinking if you use the 'img' tags), not hosting.

Hi Folks, Its listed on Terry McGee's website it is number 115, its attributed to my missus Laurie Thomsett.

Http... what..? seriously I do have a little grasp of such things, but if folk are interested they can PM me with their e-mail address and I can send loads of pics, which if they wish can upload them to the forum.

Its contained in its original case with original key and it still works.

There is a crack in the head joint, which has been sympathetically repaired/restored presumably years ago.

The websitehttps://www.bromptons.co/auction/19th-m ... -1860.html refers to a picture of it assembled.

Its a bit lapse of me, I normally offer such things on forums such as this, before fleabay or auction sites. But auction sites are a great price leveller. I understand the flute itself is not one of the greatest sounding instruments in the world, it probably needs a curator rather than a flautist....

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Terry, Yes but mine is number 115 if you recall many moons ago I sent you some pics of it, and you identified it as a long body with Brille. Its a bit unusual as the embouchure / hole has a silver plate engraved " Harry Smith from his father 1898 ".

I planned to restore it, but as with all these " ideas " they never reach realisation. Its as I found it. Ive replied to another post below giving details of the auction house.

As I mentioned in the previous post, it was a bit of a knee jerk moment to sell it. It would be nice to see it played, but I have a feeling it will probably go to a particular collector. I obtained it from a local village auction, before the advent of the internet, I asked about any provenance after I established its true worth, but no dice.

I should have offered it on here first, but what sort of value do you put on a bit of social history? I have wheeled and dealed all my life, its always a bit of a conundrum. Sometimes a well advertised/marketed auction room gets the seller the best deal, sometimes its the buyer. Swings and roundabouts..

I'm semi retired but I restore Victorian through to 1950's railway carriages to keep me out of mischief, together with a bit of watch and clock repair (my daughter is a horologist) gives me a bit of justification to restore other stuff. But it just didn't feel right to touch the Clinton.

I would be curious to see if I get any PM from interested parties.

Thanks for all your interest and input, especially Terry. Terry's website is a mine of information. I do have another unnamed, but what I feel to be a cocus wood irish flute, which once this sale has finished I will post.

Thanks again.

Err.. yes. I meant “posted on C&F” instead of “hosted on C&F”. Thanks for clarifying it.
