Tell us something.: I have played the Irish flute on and off for about 30 years. I used to play in sessions but now I play whistle, flute and harmonica in a band called Waxies Dargle.

FS: 6-key blackwood flute in D by Stephane Morvan

£2600 or Euro2900, plus carriage.
This is a 6-key, simple-system, block-mounted flute in D, made by Stephane Morvan in blackwood, in excellent condition. It is a large-holed, Pratten type of flute (I think it is a copy of a Boosey, that had keys by TK Henderson). The keys and the socket-support rings are silver. The tenons also have silver support rings at their open ends. The joints are cork-lapped. The head-cork is a silver-faced, cork-lapped wooden assembly and has a proper threaded adjuster which is operated via the head-cap. The flute is quite heavy, weighing 445 grammes (just short of 1lb). The tuning is optimised around modern pitch. The flute comes in its original case.
The flute is capable of producing a massive, rich, powerful tone but it is not the easiest flute to fill. It may take some time (a month?) for anyone who is new to this type of flute to develop their embouchure and lungs sufficiently. It is eminently suitable for large sessions. I find I have to play it for 15 minutes or so before I can get the best out of it. That may be the flute or it may be me.
I bought the flute in 2008 from a professional musician who lives in France. I had to wait 6 months for it, as he was waiting for a cocus flute from Stephane and would not part with this flute until he received his new one. The flute is not stamped, because Monsieur Morvan did not stamp his flutes prior to 2010. He recently emailed me to confirm that he did indeed make this flute and he says he will confirm it by email to any prospective buyer. You can contact him via his website.
There is currently a 14-month waiting list for Stephane Morvan flutes (that’s probably optimistic) and it costs Euro3200 for a 6-key.
History: 2008: I acquired it (I don’t know when it was made). 2009: a hairline crack in the lower end of the barrel was filled and blended in. 2014: part of the mount of the short F key broke off. I kept the parts and they were expertly pinned back on by Willy Simmons of Liverpool (see photo). Recently: cork lapping on upper joint replaced. Several pads replaced.
Reason for sale: There are no more Irish sessions in my area. I do floor spots in folk clubs (solo and duo) but my Sam Murray, being quicker to warm up, is more suitable for that. The Morvan flute should be owned by someone who plays it every day. Also, I am getting a bit old to be able to fill the Morvan flute properly.
