Marcus Hernon Recording

Post by Steve Bliven »

Anyone know of a source for a Marcus Hernon recording entitled "Traditional Irish Music Played On The Concert Flute"?

Thanks and best wishes.

Nope, haven't that one. Just Island Treasures, The Grouse in the Heather, & The Floating Crowbar.

Mentioned on thesession.org 7 years ago, as a cassette from GTD Heritage Music #C031. I don't believe GTD (Sean Walsh) ever got much out onto CD.

Not even on Marcus's own discography page.

I guess this is Sean over here, but limited selection out on CD, and a lot probably from other independent labels.

If you manage to find a cassette, I can do direct transfer to 16-bit Audio/WAV.

I transferred that cassette to MP3 years ago. It's a very enjoyable album, a little rough around the edges but nice playing and great tone. I could put it on dropbox and post a link, but I'd rather not do it without Marcus's permission. If you want to contact him and ask if it's okay with him, that would be best. If he has no problem with it I could post it here. He has a website at http://marcushernon.com and you can contact him through there.

The Best Sounding Flute I ever had was a Marcus Hernon!

I LOVE his tone and power, but have been left wanting by his CD's (Not Enough of Him). I really wish he would do a Solo Album! :poke:

Here's a fairly good one from UTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEhW3-chHG4

There was a real Boot-Stompin video done by one of our members (a Swede) years ago when he picked up his flute from Marcus that was GRAND! But I can't seem to find it.

As I said on the Irish music forum, it's on the shelf in my local library, if other options fail.

Hernon was also featured on a recent release of the Good Mixer group, a group playing at the pub of the same name in London during the 80s. Henry Benagh (their fiddleplayer) is selling those. At the time of the recording they were Henry Benagh, John Carty, Marcus Hernon and Noel O Grady.

Good mixer group @ Custy's

I have a private recording of an earlier incarnation of the same group, then Tommy keane, Henry Benagh, Noel O Grady and their then fluteplayer Michael Hynes. Lovely stuff. Following that I can say it is worth tracking down Michael and Seamus Hynes recording as well, nice fluteplaying from both. I think Peter Kennedy was responsible for that one, although I am not completely sure. I only have a tape copy of it.

As Mr. Gumby said Marcus was playing in London during the 80's at the Good Mixer in Camden and also The Telegraph session in Brixton amongst other places.

I have some recordings of Marcus, Austin Dawe & Seán Mac Donnacha playing at the Telegraph on world cup night July 1990 when England were playing Cameroon, the usually packed pub was quiet (ish) due to the football so I got a reasonable recording. If any one wants copies or to hear them I can post them, I need to do some editing first but here's a sample of what I recorded -
