- Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

Apart from playing the flute, I enjoy the whistle and guitar mainly (actually, flute is the instrument I play the least of these).
I am saving money for an accordion too, and I would like to get an octave mandolin, mandola or bouzouki one day.
A pretty strange instrument.

Nyckelharpa (which translates into Keyed Harp).chris_coreline wrote:Swedish Keyed Fiddle whose name escapes me but sounds frickin awesome

two of them turned up at a session. Everyone else put there instruments away and just sat transfixed. They were loud aswell. They also played some of the middle ages sweedish music which is basically just like partially improvised rennasence duets. absolutly stunning.Rhadge wrote:Nyckelharpa (which translates into Keyed Harp).chris_coreline wrote:Swedish Keyed Fiddle whose name escapes me but sounds frickin awesome

Nice to hear of swedish traditional music at a UK session.chris_coreline wrote:two of them turned up at a session. Everyone else put there instruments away and just sat transfixed. And yeah, "STM" often sounds pretty much like typical renaissance music, although there are many later tunes that have more of a folk-sound.

In addition to the flute, I play:
low whistles, whistles
tenor banjo
fiddle (still a rank intermediate player)
pipes (still a rank beginner)
bodhran (does this even count?)

Re: What do you play in addition to flute?
As well as the Flute I play Whistles (High and Low), a little Mandolin, and mess with the Bouzouki. I can also play Tenor Banjo, but do not own one so I don't really count it. I used to play Bass (electric) and Bassoon, but haven't played either of those for a couple years.

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

It does count. It negates at least three of the others.
Re: What do you play in addition to flute?
Growing up I played recorder, silver flute and piano... the Irish flute is my first instrument after a long break from playing music. I also see a whistle, folk harp & hammered dulcimer in my near future!

Whistle & concertina - latter with view to future (old age!!) when flute may not be so amenable.

You make me think that things are just done differently in Los Angeles. (I'm a native Californian, btw!)

Re: What do you play in addition to flute?
Just looked up Nyckelharpa on YouTube. Damn, I'd drop everything and be transfixed too!
Re: What do you play in addition to flute?
I also play fiddle and sing the occasional song.

Well perhaps I misunderstood you (my apologies if I have) but it seems like you are of the opinion the bodhran doesn't count as a valid instrument.
My remark, to be clear, was directed to the many that pick up that simple piece of skin and wood because its "easy" to play.
Anyone can play it... and its painfully clear few can play play it well. Perhaps that is what you were getting at too.
I don't think that holds any less true in say... Ruskin than in Covina.
