Colm O'Donnell, flute player

Post by jemmoore »

In November of 2011, Blayne Chastain and I had the opportunity to go to Ireland for 10 days to film flute players for our documentary, “The Keymaster: Patrick Olwell’s Story”. We met and interviewed 14 flute players, traveled over 1,000Km, and had one of the most memorable trips of our lives.

On our second day we had the pleasure of meeting Colm O’Donnell, a self-proclaimed ‘hill sheep farmer’ who is also one of the most soulful flute players we met. In this clip he not only breathes out a haunting air, he also sings the song that it came from, just lovely.

Thanks for sharing these clips with us, Jem. What a great project!! Colm O'Donnell sure gets the "Olwell flute sound" in his playing.

That was great! Thanks! Do you know the name of the air Colm plays in that clip?

Tell us something.: Desperately looking for info on overtone flutes because I recently bought an overtune flute. I´m happy to have found this interesting forum :)

Kevin Crawford plays a nice variation of it on Lunasa's Redwood album.

You always know you are listening to a consummate musician, when like a great story teller, you are magically transported to another timeless place. This is exactly what Colm O' Donnell effortlessly achieves here.

Oh! And the look he gives to camera as he invites them to film " A year in the life of a Hill Sheep Farmer " is priceless :D

I think Colm had the driest sense of humour of anyone I've ever met!
