Which Makers Don't Get Enough Credit/Press?

Post by bigsciota »

Certain makers like Olwell, Grinter, Hamilton, Murray, Burns, McGee, and Doyle get a lot of love around here, and for good reason. But are there makers you think are flying under the radar making great flutes? Speak up!

I think Peter Noy makes the finest flutes.

Also Poljez, Morvan, and Jil Lehart.

Props also to Glenn Watson from Galway. And let's not forget Bryan Byrne from VT, USA.

Best wishes.

And those guys at Rudall & Rose, too. Maybe we should stick to makers current living.

Who, sadly for the flute community, is no longer taking orders. Instead he's off to law school per his web site.

Best wishes.

I've heard good things about the French makers Poljez, Morvan and Lehart, and Lehart specifically has been brought to my attention a few times as a great option for a less expensive keyed flute. Maybe not being in the US, Ireland, or the UK (where I suspect a large majority of the members here and on thesession.org are from) means they get fewer mentions.

I guess I don't see things happening that way around here. It seems to me that every flute maker gets their share of attention around here - probably in proportion to their output of product. Things may ebb or flow for some over time but if their flutes are being played they will be talked about. This is a fairly small community here and the makers that serve the community become known almost immediately it seems. And it is a global community. I don't think it's a matter of an "equal time" policy or anything like that. It seems that when a player likes a maker's flute they post about it. That's simple and straightforward enough.

You can add Eric Juilleret to the french makers' list. I know a few flute players from Ireland who played his flutes and loved them.

I have had a Glenn Watson D and Eflat for seven years, in that time i've also bought flutes from other top makers (all great flutes) but for me the Watson flutes have an unbeatable quality on tone and character.

Law school? Then he's dead to us.
Great flute, though. As good or better than a Hammy.
