Tina Eck and Lilt

Post by Fifthtry »

Thanks to Pandora, I've come across what I think is a wonderful combo: Lilt. They are a US-based duo of flute/bouzouki. The Celtic flute player, Tina Eck, is just my style, though I'm not exactly sure what that style is. I think it's "East Galway." I very much like simple/not over-ornamented. Reminds me of Mike Rafferty, Steph Geremia. Anyone heard of them? I'm enjoying one of their CD's Onward, which is here: http://www.amazon.com/Onward-Lilt/dp/B0 ... ilt+onward.

A couple of years ago, I went to a party and a small group of beginners started playing a few very basic tunes. One was a blond German woman named Tina. She had a Generation type whistle. A year or so later I ran into Keith Carr and he told me he was now playing with a blond German woman named Tina in a group called "Lilt." I said, "wow, she must learn really really fast!" Keith laughed and said that it was a different Tina. So I guess there are at least two here in Northern Virginia. In any event, "Lilt" are indeed great and seem to be playing out and recording quite a bit now. Wish them all the best.

Yeah, that's how I found out who the blonde woman with the HUGE flute sound was in the few sessions I attended several years ago. She has simply awesome power and tone.

blush .. hey .. it's the FLUTE, more than me. A 2000 Pratten model made by Patrick Olwell and sold to me in 2002. Simply a monster gem with a growling sound, and it can be sweet too. Serial number 555. An incredible instrument, my best friend and trusted companion.

This thread just found me by surprise. Friends told me. And yes I am blond and German and live in Washington and play Irish music ... and I almost never post here, just lurk and read occasionally ... but I am sure happy some of you like "Lilt".

We are at: http://www.liltirishmusic.com if you want to see or hear more...

This is not meant as an advertisement .. just saying 'thank you' for the nice comments !

As for "East Galway Style" - yes, Mike Rafferty was and will forever be one of my heroes. And Harry McGowan from near Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo (Carrowmore) has been my wonderful friend and mentor for many years. If you've never heard of him, please check out the great recordings from the Coleman Center in Gurteen. (http://www.colemanirishmusic.com/shop/c ... rtist_name) Harry has never recorded a solo album but you find him on some of those compilations. One of the most hidden treasures of flute playing in Sligo. Harry's son Shane is a mighty guitar player. And he's around, playing with Michelle O'Brien, Lunasa et al all over the world.

Peter Horan, June McCormack and Matt Molloy are the obvious flute heroes. So ... here it goes.

Anyway ... Just to say hello,

dereelium - Tina - blond - German - flute player - in Washington DC, Lilt etc. cheers ti

Harry McGowan also was recorded (with a bunch of other Sligo players) on Wooden Flute Obsession volume 2. He's playing 2 jigs solo "The Mill Pond/Brendan Tonra's" on a cocus Olwell.

He also appears on "As We Got Them: Traditional Flute And Fiddle Music From County Sligo"
