Contrabass chanter?
I stumbled across this video recently (the first 55 seconds is relevant):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu60MwpMiow
I've seen low D chanters for border pipes, and a chanter without keys that plays lower than that becomes impractical due to the large spacing of the holes. But with a coiled bore, an A 220 chanter, or lower (an A 110?) would be possible. Brass tubing would be the obvious material choice, but I can also imagine ways to fabricate it in wood, although not easily.
I might try making one in brass using a tubing bender. Has anyone considered this or encountered discussion about the possibility?

Re: Contrabass chanter?
I've heard some bass D chanters and wonder why anyone would want one lower than that.

Another option, rather than the coiled bore, is the way a serpent is made, to bring the far-apart fingerholes within reach

- Tell us something.: Hi Nano. I was somewhat active on the Chiffboards maybe 5 or 6 years ago, participating in several whistle tours (Bracker, Hardy, Ellis). I took a break from the Chiffboards, and music mostly, for several years because I got a full-time job and had a baby. I'm easing back into the music, though (which is great, I missed it). It's good to be back!

Re: Contrabass chanter?
It certainly sounds like it would be a fun experiment!
But, your end result will probably not behave much like a border pipe chanter, because the coiled brass tubing will be roughly cylindrical, more like an SSP chanter.
...Unless, of course, you're planning on making a tapered AND coiled chanter bore out of brass tubing. In that case, hats off to you!

Chas, that video looks more like a 12 palmi than a 7 palmi to me. Sucker's big.

well, here's the thing. couple posts back someone said that unless you flare this spiral bore, this chanter will be a quiet one indeed. Theyre right. "Mr Curly" has a mounted transducer and is probly being run through a rackfull of Digital Signal Processors. Racketts, with their abnormally long, doubled back bores, IIRC-- are not particularly loud & (also iirc), they were designed to be played "In Consort", SATB style, the shortest, highest rackett carrying the most important melodic voice. If you can make this idea work,,, then go for it! but i think your kinda gonna be fighting the laws of physics sooner or later with it, yaknowhaddimean?...
