Hi. I have recently started to learn the cabrette and the first thing that strikes me is how certain notes of the scale deviate from the "just intonation" that I am used to hearing when I play my other pipes. Does anyone have any information about why? Also, which ones should be "in tune"? Thanks. Ian

The cabrette have a non-tempered scale, it means that the "tierce" (third ?) is neutral, Bernard Blanc makes them with a little more tempered third, but it is always a bit surprising to hear because our ears have been "educated" to fully tempered scales. I encourage you to go on this cabrette forum, it is in french but a lot of great pipers like Michel Esbelin, pipemakers like Marius Lutgerink are on the forum: http://cabretteforum.xooit.fr/

Thank you. I have been sent a pdf that shows in graph form the degree of deviation of each note from equal temperament. Also a couple of pages about the cabrette, in French, by Bernard Blanc. Contact me direct if you want a copy
