Bulgarian Kaba Gaida
Hello, I'm curious to know if there are any Kaba gaida players here?
I just recently got hooked on this instrument. I've got one ordered.
Check this really great clip out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHRT4ChT ... F5&index=2

My Dear Friend:
I´m really interested to know where I can order a good instrument. I can see a lot of Kaba Gaidas in EBAY but I don´t know if there are good instruments. Where do you purchase your instrument?
Thanks, friend!.

There's a Highland Bagpiper chat site called Bob Dunsire. (bobdunsire.comForums)
On their "other" forum (for uilleann pipes, smallpipes, and all non-GHBs) there have been threads about purchasing Ebay gaidas.
From what people say, the Ebay gaidas are "real" gaidas made by good makers.
I would check out the bobdunsire threads to see testimony about several of the Ebay seller's specific makers.
I actually have a very nice old Kaba gaida that I never play, that I wouldn't mind selling all that much. However, I bought it back in the days when Bulgaria was still communist and it was illegal to take gaidas out of the country. (They were protected as "national treasures" of sorts.)
Since it was very hard to find Bulgarian instruments (which had to be smuggled out of the country at the risk of prison for the smuggler) the prices were high: I paid around $500 for that Kaba gaida.
With the end of communism and coming of free trade in combination with the horrible state of the Bulgarian economy, now good-quality gaidas are cheap.
But if anyone wants a nice communist-era Kaba gaida in perfect playing condition, airtight bag, good reeds, plays in tune, make an offer!!!

Hello Luife and Richard (PAN-Celtic) !!!
I have a sound sample of my Kaba Gaida in the key of E (Mi)
on My Space Music. Type in "Sean The Piper" in the
search field and the page comes up.
The sound samples are all from my "Bagpipes of the World"
CD (1999).
There's a GOOD Piper from Australia on You Tube,
playing his Kaba Gaida (also in E). His name is CORY DALE
and he is also on a DVD called:
"Bulgarian Gaida Instructional Video" Volume Two
This is a production of Boyan Savov's "bulgariana (DOT) com"
Mr. Dale plays both the Kaba Gaida, AND the "Jura"
Gaida from Thrace, on this DVD.
I have to say that if Richard wants to sell HIS Kaba
Gaida, that I sold him years ago.....well, it's a very good
instrument with a very thick-skinned
Nubian Goat Bag, which I cured on salt,
and trimmed the Fur short (which is on the inside of the bag).
It has 2 new Reeds (Chanter and Drone),
made by Vasil Bebeleckov, one of the
best, "World Class" Bulgarian Gaidar,
who now lives in San Jose,
California.

Yea, my gaida arrived today. I was rather surprised at the quality, I expected far less. The bag is as hard as hell though. Does anyone have any tips for softening it up? Oh, the reeds were most acceptable as well, not as hard as I expected.
My jack russell is dying to get his teeth into it, there must be some smell coming from it, although I cant smell anything.
Cheers
Bob
