Do any of you know something about John Liestman pipes

Post by docarrete »

Hello there, I am thinking about buying the 11 key set of NSP by Liestman. However, I have not been able to find that many people that play his pipes. Are his pipes good? HOW can I get a hold of John Liestman??? For that much money I could also buy a set by Colin Ross in brass, and we all know Ross' reputation is excellentand workmanship is excellent.

Are there some pipe maker I should avoid?

Thanks

Hi Diego,

I've had dealings with John. He's a very nice and helpful fellow. His pipes have won NSP makers' competitions so he's no slouch. It's also a big advantage that he's on this side of the pond so he can help you if you get into trouble. Colin Ross is also a lovely fellow. I've had several sets of his pipes come through the store...extremely nice work but he's awfully far away. :)

Leistman is a regular C&F guy. Send him a pM or google him and find his website. He wrote an excellent book about NSPs that I'd highly recommend.

Emphatically, YES!

Although I dont think any are mentioned on current discussions here;

either way, dont expect anyone to publicly decry their nightmares with pipemakers...you'll get 'pm's I'm sure...

But certainly the right thing to do is to ask around for pipers who already have an instrument by the maker in question.

Leistman, Ross, Evans and Sloan are all great makers of NSPs.

Can't go wrong with any of those. There are others with good reputations as well with whom I have no experience so I don't mention them. There are some to strenuously avoid as well.

John's pipes are excellent and though I have not owned one (though I am picture holding one in John's book.....) I have known a couple of sets that friends owned. John is also great on support. He is a part time maker and tends to make what he feels like and then sells them rather than making to order. Given the demands of a full time job and small family he prefers not to get into a situation where people are needing to chance him for their orders.

John's website is http://www.liestman.com/

I would certainly give an ear to Ian Lawther regarding NSP makers, topic starter: he's an outstanding NSP player + versatile musician.

Hey, thanks for all your help. I know now for certain that Mr. Liestman is not a lousy maker. All the replies have been consistently good about Mr. Liestman work... That set that is for sale, is certanly a very nice looking set. Thanks again to all of you.
