I guess in the old days it was so. The video's Ive seen of him, his bag looks modern- either synthetic, or well seasoned leather.

I haven't at the moment - but I will try to understand how my new camera works, and then I'll post one. It is a 25 by Luigi Ricci, I also have another one by Guatieri which I have tuned to A, and a Z. lucana by an unknown maker which was supposed to be in D, but I haven't managed to tune it any lower than Eb. On this one, the short chanter is obviously a replacement by another maker.
