I recently uploaded a bunch of new instructional videos on Swedish bagpiping. http://www.youtube.com/user/ogallmo

Better quality (both picture and sound) than the previous ones.

This is a video of me playing my Sicilian zampogna or in the sicilian dialect "ciaramedda." Both tunes are traditional. I mention in the comment box that the pipe was made in Adrano (province of Catania) and that it is hand carved instead of made on a lathe. I got this pipe in summer 2007 directly from the elderly pipe maker who I have since developed a good friendship with. (My Sicilian relatives live near his town) In addition to making and playing pipes he is an accomplished poet in the Sicilian language.

For those of you who don't know about the Sicilian zampogna, it's two equal length chanters (three notes overlap) and 3 drones that play diff octaves of the 5th. All pipes have single reeds made of cane. Special thanks to my friend Sean Folsom for helping me get over the huge hurdle of reedmaking. :)

Tell us something.: I'm back in the uilleann piping world after a ten year hiatus. Uilleann piping chops, here I come!

I'm a smallpipe and Border pipe maker and we'll just see where that leads to.

Here is a recent Youtube posting of Sicilian pipers that's pretty good. The interesting thing is that these guys are located in Agrigento a substantial distance from Messina and Catania where the "a paro" piping tradition generally is found. I inquired about this in the comment section and for those of you who don't read Italian they told me that they believe that they might be the only town in Agrigento that plays the pipes, but they mentioned that it is a tradition there that is still being passed from generation to generation as you can see from the various age of the pipers. This is a good sign to see a young kid who is so good at the pipes.

Also, I find the fabric decorations on the pipes and bag covers to be quite interesting. This type of elaborate decoration is something that I have only seen with Sicilian pipes and goes along with the Sicilian tradition of adding ornate coloration to their valued possessions. Another example of this would be the famous Caretto Siciliano - the donkey/horse drawn carts that had detailed wood carvings, metal working and paintings. Now that horse drawn carts are no longer used you can still find this tradition applied to the 3 wheel grocery carts they use to sell fresh fruit in the open air markets.

The above clip is of resident C&F piper Sean Folsom soulfully playing the Irish War pipe as a gentle ocean breeze caresses brow. Pay no attention to the slightly unromantic orange temporary fencing and parking lot in the background.
