Mylar is the trademark name of Dupont. It is simply PET plastic sheet. Has been around since the 50s. Commonly used for stencils, etc. Typical thickness is 7 to 10 mil, or .007 to .010 inches, but can be had in other thicknesses, of course. Can be bought by the bundle for cheap nearly any craft store and the web.

I'm sure there are multitudes of composites etc if you want to find it. I'm not sure of the composition of mylar balloons.
