Welsh Bagpipe and Pibgorn day October 14th

Post by Geraint »

Shwmae!

For those interested, I'm organising a Welsh Bagpipes and Pibgorn Day in Ystradgynlais on October 14th. It's at a local scout building, with several rooms and a wonderful old hall.. There are also beds and bunks available in the Hall, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen. It's a fabulous building at the top end of the Tawe Valley in South Wales. Other accomodation is available locally. There may well be a session on the previous Friday, and I'm working on some things for Sunday too.

There will be workshops and sessions: the history of pipes in Wales; building a repertoire; tunes we should all know; taster sessions on Weish pipes and pibgorn; absolute beginners whistle. Probably more!

We'll only charge enough to cover costs. I'm not applying for grants or paying anyone- this is a chance for like-minded people to get together, share their experiences and insights, and play tunes. There will be a session/tmpath/noson lawen in the evening.

If you already play, or are just curious, here's your chance!

Shwmae! Things are looking good. I'm pleased that fine pibgorn player and maker Gafin Morgan is going to be present to demonstrate his instruments. This will will be a great day of tunes and companionship. Come over :-)

Details out:

Friends, hello.

Would you like to try the pibgorn, one of Wales' most special and interesting old instruments? Here's your chance!

We're organising a Pigborn and Welsh Bagpipe Day on October 14th in Ystradgynlais, only 15 minutes from J45 on the M4.

We're hiring Penrhiwfarteg Scout hut, and so we'll have plenty of room to make music and socialise. There's a kitchen so tea and coffee will be available too. There are beds available for those who'd like to stay overnight as well. Local parks and fields and paths (and an indoor playcentre) are ideal for families who come up for the day.

Teaching sessions start at 11 am. Doors open at 10.15. The teaching sessions will last around 50 minutes each. It's only £12 for the day, or £4 for each individual session. If this is difficult, please let us know. We aim to cover costs, and not to make profit.

The day is appropriate for those who already have Welsh pipes or pibgorn (in D, with a single reed in the chanter) You are also welcome if you'd like to try them for the first time. Instruments will be available for you to have a go.

Sessions will be held two at a time. Here they are:

Introduction to the pibgorn with Gafin Morgan. One of Wales foremost pipers, Gafin also makes pibgyrn, and will have some for sale. A chance to try out instruments, and also to take one home if you like! http://www.pibgorn.co.uk/

Good tunes 1 with Jane Ruel. Jane is a vastly experienced piper and pibgorn player, and has a great range of Welsh tunes that will sit well on our instruments.

Good tunes 2 with Caradog Jones. One of Wales' best young traditional musicians, Caradog also plays the harp and other woodwinds

Welsh tunes for any instrument. Bring your own instrument!

Tuning and reeds, with contributions from the tutors (and you, if you have any good ideas!)

New tunes with Geraint Roberts. Geraint is an experienced piper and has amassed a range of great new tunes composed by contemporary musicians

Whistle for beginners with Tracy Hales. The whistle is an ideal introduction to pibgorn. Have a go- some are available for you to try. Tracy is a very experienced musician and educator

Gerard Kilbride will bring a range of electronic instruments for us to look at. Learn more about modern takes on old instruments. Gerard is one of Wales' foremost folk musicians, and makes wonderful fiddles and pibgyrn too. http://pibgyrn.com/

There's a Noson Lawen and Session from around 7.30. Play the tunes you've learned, and gain inspiration from others.

Tea and coffee will be available. The shops, cafes and pubs of Ystradgynlais are a 15 minute walk away, or a short hop in a car. Bring your own sandwiches and so on if you wish!

Bring a whistle in D to practice tunes. Bring any acoustic instruments that you also play for the session in the evening.
