The Guelph Line

Post by Tunborough »

At the 2012 world championships, the 78th Fraser Highlanders played a medley that began with "The Guelph Line", and "Silver Creek". Does anyone know where these tunes come from?

I have the DVD of The Worlds 2012, and it gives the composers:

The Guelph Line Doug MacRae

Silver Creek James MacHattie

Doug MacRae is the Pipe Major of the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band.

James MacHattie is the Principal of the College of Piping, PEI Canada.

Here's an article about James MacHattie

Tell us something.: My son plays the pipes and we are attending our first Tionol in the Catskills in October. I am a humble banjo player. My wife plays fiddle, other son the fiddle, and twin girls fiddle and accordion.

I know the road well. I was on it a couple of days ago, and have driven most of its 40 km length into Burlington more than once. The Guelph Line actually ends where the road leaves Halton Region, quite some distance east of Guelph. Silver Creek is farther east than that, but still in Halton.

It was the tune I was wanting more information about. I wonder if the tune got its name when the band drove the Guelph Line to get to the Scottish Festival in Fergus from their home base in Toronto. I tried contacting the 78th Fraser Highlanders through their website, but received no response.

I'd be interested in learning the tune on whistle, but I'd probably need a lot of tonguing or glottal stops to even approach the percussive style that suits the tune so well.
