Any info for Galotta 72 bass Piano accordion

Post by ermitrude46 »

I have now on order a galotta 72. One thing though, does anyone have any idea of it´s history, all that I know is that It is East German. I´m guessing it is aprox 80´s, nothing like the new boxy type accordions on sale today.

I had a 120 bass Galotta which is now for sale at a Hobgoblin shop. Not sure of the age, but I would guess 1980s too. It had a good sound but was very heavy to play - the bellows needed a lot of strength, so that I could not play for very long before it started hurting!

I have a feeling that Galottas were made by the same factory that produced the Harmona brand. The company was called G.A.Schlott & Soehne, founded in 1909 - I can't find out when they went out of business, though.

Thank you! Shame that there is so little to find on the brand, the accordion itself is lovely, has a sound of it´s own (Well I think so!).
I´m surprised also, becouse of the german conection. There is plenty on the Hohners, Italian makes. Perhaps it is a brand that did well to a point. Hence the lack of information.

I´m Hoping that the Galotta 72 bass won´t be so heavy or hurt as much!!!!! The other one that I was looking at, was A Hohner Arietta 72 Bass (Green!), from the Bluejewel accordions people, who were extremely helpful in helping me to decide which one to have in the end!!!!

I'd be interested to hear your views on the Galotta when it arrives. It should definitely be easier than the 120, anyway, because of the smaller size.

I used German Google to search for information on the company, but didn't find much more - Schlott & Sons operated in the same part of East Germany as several other accordion manufacturers, incl Harmona and Weltmeister, all of which eventually merged into one big VEB (Volkseigener Betrieb, i.e. Company owned by The People...) under the socialist regime. East German goods from that period were not known for quality. Hohner was (is) in West Germany. The East-West differences, and a reluctance to engage with the communist era, may be why there's not much info on the Klingenthal accordion manufacturers.
