Changing keys on accordion

We have some evidence, however, that you may have to pay for the reeds.

Changing keys on accordion

Post by si beag si mor »

Is it possible to change the keys by putting in new reeds only?
If I got the reeds for D/D sharp box for example plus the correct base reeds and put them in my C/G two row accordion would I then have a D/D sharp box?

It's possible but not as easy as it sounds. If you are implying putting D/D# reeds onto reedblocks for a C/G it would likely not work. You will likely have to have new reedblocks made to make it work. Your best bet for that sort of stuff is Dancemaster Accordions down in Florida.

Yes ... I am assuming the conversion is done by a competent accordion tech.

A friend of mine plays an older Hohner Pokerwork converted to B/C from whatever it was originally. It's a very nice box.

I looked at a conversion as well a few years back, as I'd gotten a G/C box that no one was using, but what I was told was that it wouldn't be worth the money, and that it would probably be at least as expensive as getting a whole new box (a second hand one) with the right tuning to begin with.

Thanks for this useful info.

I'll look around for a D box even though I hate to part with my Paolo Soprani.
