New tutor for chromatic harmonica in Irish music

We have some evidence, however, that you may have to pay for the reeds.

New tutor for chromatic harmonica in Irish music

Post by SteveShaw »

Brendan Power has just published a new book/CD course, "Play Irish Music on the Chromatic Harmonica," for anyone interested in playing Irish tunes on chroms. You need stock chroms in G and D to follow the course. I've just reviewed the course for Harmonica World magazine. It is suitable for beginners but it gets very challenging fairly quickly! His aim is to get you up to speed with your chops and get you playing. The CD follows the book closely and has lots of examples of Brendan playing the exercises and tunes, starting slowly and getting faster. A lot of attention is paid to the use of authentic ornamentation. It's very well-paced and has lots of background information. I have no connection with Brendan but I'm mentioning it here becasue I think it's very good. :)

Not having seen the tutorial yet
Is this intended for the standard "solo" tuned 12 Hole harmonicas on in D and one in G
or a Chromatic in D/G ?

Just off-the-shelf regular chroms, one in G and the other in D, so two separate harps. I've never heard of a chromatic in D/G. You may be thinking of one of Brendan's highly-modified harps that are built like a chrom but which play in D button in and G button out (or vice versa - can't remember). These are not chromatic instruments despite appearances. Chromatic means they can play every note of the scale.

Thanks Steve

Yes I was referrring to one of Brendan's customs

I understand the chromatic scale and the chromatic instruments

but in the case of Brendan's custom D/G , the bodies are "chromatics"

Again thanks for the heads up

Jeff
