Respectful suggestion for a forum rename

We have some evidence, however, that you may have to pay for the reeds.

I totally agree. I would have never stopped in here if I didn't get a concertina for Christmas. I've played the harmonica for a few years now. I'm self taught and my teacher never mentioned anything to me about free reeds. All he said was "blow" and "draw."

Dale could just make a harmonica forum but you might be even lonelier until it takes off!

There use to be a uke forum but I can't seem to find it now. I guess it never made it?

Anyways, don't be shy! People use to post everything on the whistle forum until Dale or somebody expanded it out!

-"Lu Sheng & the Derivatives"?

-Sounds like a rock band or finance jargon. "Paulo & the Sopraniettes"? Oh dear. Much worse. Hmm..

-I know.."Reed Pleasers".
This will be popular with people named Reed, but nobody else perhaps.

-It still lacks something..

Why all the jokes?

This harmonica stuff is serious biz!

A reeded instrument that fits in your pocket. Play blues, country, Irish and anything else!

Lots of great harmonica playing with Patrick Street. I don't know much about it but I think the instrument has got alot of soul!

For me I like the name of the forum just the way it is.

"Squeezeboxes in Irish Trad"

If "harmonica" had been in the title, it would most likely not attracted me. I think of harmonicas as in the first type of music mentioned earlier-- "blues". I know it plays other music.

But thats just me. I play mostly uilleann pipes and play the accordion for a change. Theres nothing like pulling the accordion out of the case and just play, something thats hard to do with the pipes.

What ever its named, as long as accordions are discussed, I'll be following the forum.

My 2 cents...... Ed

Yeah but harmonicas are supposed to be covered according to the sub-blurb. It's a bit like making people assume that whistles are covered by the flute forum just because they have holes as well. Harmonicas are not squeezeboxes, not by any stretch of the imagination!

This is a difficult problem. Having heard a couple of very fine harmonica recordings, including Steve Shaw's, I fully respect the power of the instrument for the kind of music on which we focus at C&F. I'd start a harmonica forum in a heartbeat if we thought there'd be much activity there.

That said--and, again, I'll go with the consensus if y'all ever reach one--I'm not sure lumping the boxes and the harmonicas together makes much sense. The "free reed" designation is technically true--sort of like calling a piano a percussion instrument--but I'm not sure how widely that phrase is used and understood by people, especially beginners.

What do you guys think of this?:

Free Reeds In Irish Trad: Squeezeboxes and Harmonicas

Presently reads as:

Squeezeboxes in Irish Trad
Free reed instruments in Irish Traditional Music.
Moderators rich, Dale, Alan, Redwolf, Nanohedron, Joseph E. Smith

Proposed:

Free Reeds in Irish Trad
Squeezeboxes and Harmonicas in Irish Traditional Music.
Moderators rich, Dale, Alan, Redwolf, Nanohedron, Joseph E. Smith

I think that is both educational and accurate.

I vote for it..... Ed

You know me, Dale. I'm a very humble man. I'd even accept:

Free Reeds In Irish Trad: Squeezeboxes (and Harmonicas too!)

I'm for this one:

Free Reeds In Irish Trad: Squeezeboxes and Harmonicas

There is no reason to make a harmonica feel like a second class instrument.

What is the point of the "Free Reeds" bit, though?

Why not just The Squeezebox and Harmonica forum?

Or if you want to keep the Irish trad bit, Squeezeboxes and Harmonicas in Irish Trad ?

Concertinas can go to concertina.net or consider themselves squeezeboxes, and who cares about shengs and melodicas?

Dale said that "Free Reed" is not understood by all, so why not drop it?

No subtitle or byline necessary - or, everybody give suggestions for a humorous one à la pipes forum...

Let's get the name settled. Then we can all go back to not posting anything here.

Actually, I was hoping that a name-change would encourage a bit more harmonica participation.

Question without agenda - why is "In Irish Trad" part of the name for this forum when Irish trad's not specifically mentioned in any of the others? (barring the ITM forum)

To fill a gap in the online world - and because that is what most of those who asked Dale for such a forum wanted. See my reply to Martin earlier.
