What's up with these bass chords on Saltarelle Bouebe C#/D?

We have some evidence, however, that you may have to pay for the reeds.

What's up with these bass chords on Saltarelle Bouebe C#/D?

Post by maze »

Given that this is an irish bouebe box, the bass chords seem more appropriate to playing in A?... does anyone have a chart or diagram showing what the left hand bass arrangement is for these boxes?

I expected D's and G's on push and pull, but that is not the case.

thanks!!

guessing it's the standard Paolo layout:

(top of instrument)
.............outside......inside
chord......A/E......... F#/B(m)
bass.......A/E...........F#/B
chord......D/A..........D/G
bass........D/A..........D/G

There's a common variation which has G both on the press and draw on the bottom inside row buttons; that's what i have on my Lilly.

That's as it should be. Both those pairs give you D on the push. Each pair of buttons is set up to give you I and V chords in a particular key -- D, G, A, or B minor. The outside bottom pair gives you I and V chords in the key of D (D and A chords) while the inside pair gives I and V in the key of G (G and D chords).

I think you meant to say "Key of D" rather than "Key of A".

Interestingly, i have an old one-row in D with four bass buttons; the configuration has the bottom two buttons in B min and the top two in D maj -- which always confuses me when playing it as i'm used to having the D maj buttons on the bottom.

Here's Jackie Daly's layout on his Saltarelle (12-bass):

Jackie Daly's C#/D box with 12 basses
(top of instrument)
.............outside...inside
chord.....A/E........F#/B(m)
bass ......A/E........F#/B
chord.....D/A........G/G
bass ......D/A........G/G
chord.....C#/G#....F/C
bass ......C#/G#....F/C

the middle and top eight buttons are the same as i have on the Lilly (except all major, no B min).

These layouts are on the web at

Yes, of course. (See what happens when I try and post about technical stuff without an instrument handy? Damn this slow work day.)
