One-row tunes in D?

We have some evidence, however, that you may have to pay for the reeds.

One-row tunes in D?

Post by Digger »

I have a one-row in D and would like suggestions for relatively easy Irish tunes for the one-row melodeon. Sol, how about some of those Newfoundland tunes? Links to transcriptions of said tunes would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks,

Rand

Rand,

Here's a great sight to check out midi files and dots..

http://www.slowplayers.org/

The Road to Lisdoonvarna on the music list sqeezes out pretty nice on one row. There are probably others that would work also.

Rand, the first Newfoundland tunes I learned on one-row were the set "Coming from the Races" and "Bride's Favorite". They're on both the Frank Maher recordings -- the radio show bootleg and the actual album, I mean. I don't know whether he recorded them in G or D -- D is a good guess, because that's the key my wife learned them on in fiddle -- but they're the sort of tunes you play in whatever key one-row you have handy. :) (Actually, I just remembered now, I first learned them off a Plankerdown Band album (with Frank Maher and Kelly Russell) and they played them in G there. But I'm pretty sure Christina Smith (of the Maher's Bahers) taught them in D. Ah, keys can get confusing on these tunes where really, they're in whatever key your box is in.)

I don't know if the dots are available anywhere on the net -- I can't do it today, but if you haven't had any luck by about Wednesday, let me know and I'll work out the ABCs.

Paidin O Rafferty lays out really nicely on the one-row, and if you don't mind not doing cuts on the high F#, you can play the whole three-part tune without shifting once.

Here are a few I play on a one-row that seem fairly easy (edit: maybe not easy, but they seem to sit well on the one-row):

The Mug of Brown Ale (jig)
Tobin's Favorite (jig)

Germans (Barn Dances) (from an Altan recording)...really nice on the one-row.

Tommy People's (reel)
Sunny Banks (single reel)
The Dairy Maid (single reel)

Miss Thompson's (reel, sometimes a hornpipe)...from a Sharon Shannon CD (she plays fiddle on this track, not box)

The Durrow (reel) from Micheal Darby O Fatharta's Bosca Bideach recording (all one-row/melodeon)...great CD.

Sunny Banks (single reel)
The Dairy Maid (single reel)
Miss Thompson's (reel, sometimes a hornpipe)

Hi Ed. I play them all in D, or at least I don't have to "play around" any notes like c-natural or G#, that I'm aware of.

Mug of Brown Ale is probably more of an A Mixolydian tune, but the version I know doesn't ever use C-natural (or C# for that matter).

Brett,

Thanks very much for your reply. My one row is in the key of C and I find it a little easier to play in that key as oppose to its other key of G. I will start on some of your tunes as see how it goes.

Thanks again.... Ed

Actually, the one-row I've currently got is in C, but I pretend it's a D instrument, so the tunes are really coming out in C.

One-rows in D are hard to come by for some reason...I've found lot's of them in C, next common seems to be G, and then a few Ds and As.

I do have my eye on a D box, but haven't saved up enough money for it yet.

Here's a link to The Dairy Maid (played on a Hohner one-row Vienna style C box)...

http://www.bloomington.in.us/~brett/dairymaid.mp3

There are a couple of others on the Clips & Snips tune site in the misc. area.
