My daughter goes to Nobby at the Hobgoblin in Crawley for banjo lessons. He's good.

"Nobby at the Hobgoblin in Crawley" ... That is so wonderfully English. :)

Isn't it just. Unfortunately I don't live in Dorset or Somerset, where the placenames are more colourful, and you could have your lessons in Okeford Fitzpaine or Melbury Bubb. Or even better: in Worcestershire you might take your fiddle to Wyre Piddle.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Wyre Piddle is not far from where I am. Also, just up the road from me, close to each other are Trumpet and Pixlie. I've always liked the sound of the Somerset town of Curry Rivel. Somewhere on the old London Road near Reading there is a signpost to two separate places (one place per word). The sign reads "Ham Sandwich".

Um ... no. It's true.

Well, it turns out that one tiny detail isn't - it's not all that close to Reading. It's near Dover, in fact. I was remembering the sign from going in the car on holiday with my Mum and Dad. I'd remembered passing Reading all right (which we did) but then it's further after that than I remembered. There really is a sign that reads "Ham Sandwich". If you go to Google maps and look for Sandwich in Kent, you'll see that there's a place called Ham right next to it. (All the rest of the names are also completely Kosher. Oh, well, I suppose Ham isn't ... )

I'll bet those towns had been around well before the good Earl invented his eponymous food item. :)

Yes, I was thinking the same. Except that he didn't invent it, of course. It was just named after him. Similarly, Raglan (seat of the Lords Raglan, I believe) is less than 20 minutes drive from my house. He gave his name to the sleeve, but I bet he didn't knit it.

And others have Yank mock incredulity flying right over their head(s).

That's what the winky smiley was for. Wink-wink. Nudge-nudge. :poke:

Yeah, it's not near as subtle face-to-face. Ah, well...I tried. :)
