In addition to being THE klezmer clarinettist, Nafthulie Brandwein was an incredible showman. Evidently he frequently wore a suit of Christmas lights at his concerts. Problem was, he also sweat. Sure enough, one night he sweat through his clothes and started getting shocked and eventually the suit caught fire. He wasn't injured seriously, and I think finished the show after he shucked the lights. But he didn't wear the lights after that.

Was it Brandwein or Tarras that played certain songs with his back turned so that competitors could not learn his special fingering or ornaments.

That was Brandwein, Daniel. Very fiery and quite untrained. Tarras on the other hand was very polished and musically well-schooled. Being just a bit younger probably meant that he benefited from the fact that being a musician in Amercia was already a somewhat more respectable calling than in Eastern Europe.

One of the finest younger bands playing now is called Naftule's Dream.

It is said that no musician wanted to share rooms with Naftule, they say that he was mean when on the bottle.
