Album recommendations with bouzouki?

Post by Thomaston »

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for good ITM albums that have nice tasteful bouzouki accompaniment.
I've already got some good examples in my library (De Dannan, Dervish, Bua, Donal Lunny) but I'm looking for more.

I've been playing bouzouki for about 3 years now, but I've decided to make it my main focus of practice for a while, and figured it would be good to listen to good examples as I do it.

Thanks in advance!

One of my favourite albums is "If Anyone Can" by Leo McCann. Exceptionally tasteful, lovely tunes and great playing. Leo on button box, Aaron Jones on Bouzouki and Chris Driver on double bass. You'll go a long way to find more tasteful bouzouki playing than from Aaron.

few names from the top of my head
you can try Bohola

Slide with Mick Broderick http://www.slide-ireland.com/
Bonny Men http://www.thebonnymen.ie/
there's a great singer here in Dublin and he's playing a mean bouzouki Daori Farrell http://daoiri.com/
not ITM but great band and a brilliant bouzouki player Jamie McMennemy Kornog - Jamie also recorded a album with Fred Morrison.

Tell us something.: I've been a whistle player for over 40 years now, which is a sobering thought. I got started on a battered old Generation D and, well, just never stopped really!

Current gigs are The Powderkegs border morris, the concert band Trebuchet with our music theatre show The Mill Ballads www.themillballads.com, and Welsh dance band Caffl.

Niall Ó Callanáin plays lovely bouzouki on both Deiseal albums, 'The Long Long Note' and 'Sunshine Dance'.

I don't know if you can still pick either of those up on CD as they're a few years old now, but Amazon UK has both available as MP3 downloads.

A great band and two of my favourite albums.

Tell us something.: Some of my original tunes are displayed at https://thesession.org/members/49476
I play several flutes, many whistles, many guitars, bouzouki, banjo, and own way too many pedals.
I could open a music store if I didn't live in the back woods of Pennsylvania.

One of the classic Bouzouki/Cittern albums from 1983 is Gerald Trimble's 'First Flight'. He essentially introduced the Stefan Sobel to the US masses. The playing still sounds fresh 20 years later.

Here's an eBay link to the cover and liner notes (as long as the listing lasts)

My favorite bouzouki albums (although actually I think it's the Swedish "Latmandola" variant) are these two:

Fully Rigged -- Aly Bain & Ale Möller

Beyond the Stacks -- Aly Bain & Ale Möller

Just lovely Shetland fiddle with a great 'zouk (or 'lat) player backing.
